Is a CG degree worth it in the UK?
Opinionated and data-backed. When NCCA Bournemouth, NFTS, Ravensbourne, or Escape Studios BA earn the loan. When most other UK universities in 2026 do not. What Plan 5 actually costs.
By Joel Reed, Editor. Last verified 2026-07-06.
TL;DR
- Yes, for: NCCA Bournemouth BA (industry-leading pipeline), NFTS postgrad (funded, elite, industry-embedded), Ravensbourne for specific tracks, Escape Studios BA (industry-embedded London).
- No, for: most other UK universities selling CG, VFX, or “animation and games” degrees in 2026. Named examples inside.
- The bill: £27,750 in tuition (£9,250 x 3) plus £15,000-£30,000 living costs. Plan 5 repayment starts at £25,000/yr income, 9% above threshold, written off after 40 years.
- The alternative: self-taught + one mentor-led online course (£1,000-£3,000 total) works for most disciplines. Not for animation or Nuke compositing.
- Visa route: a UK CG degree can be the Skilled Worker or Graduate visa hinge for non-UK students. That is a legitimate reason to enrol even if the tuition is not.
The four UK CG programmes worth the money in 2026.
NCCA Bournemouth (BA and MSc, computer animation)
The National Centre for Computer Animation at Bournemouth University is the reason UK animation punches above its weight. Alumni credit list reads like the Framestore, DNEG, and Aardman senior directories. UK fees are £9,535/yr, three years for the BA. See the NCCA site for current intake.
NFTS (postgrad only, funded)
The National Film and Television School at Beaconsfield runs a two-year Digital Effects MA and a Model Making MA that funnel directly into UK studios. Fees are effectively covered by BFI + Skillset + studio bursaries for accepted UK students. Selection is competitive; the outcome is close to guaranteed. See nfts.co.uk.
Ravensbourne (specific tracks)
Ravensbourne on Greenwich Peninsula runs a Digital Film Production BA and a Motion Graphics BA that graduate into working London studios. Not every course is worth it; the film production and motion graphics tracks are.
Escape Studios BA (industry-embedded London)
Escape Studios in Holborn runs a BA Hons VFX and a BA Hons Games Art through Pearson College, SFE-eligible, £9,535/yr UK fees. Placement year is genuine, and the school is walking distance from Framestore and DNEG. See our full Escape Studios review.
Where the loan is not worth it.
Most UK universities selling CG, VFX, or “animation and games” degrees in 2026 under-deliver on employment. This is not a slight against the teaching staff; it is what happens when a course is priced to fill seats rather than to produce Framestore juniors. Check any programme by counting studio credits in its alumni list and cross-referencing LinkedIn.
Named examples where the 2026 alumni-to-studio pipeline is thin (based on LinkedIn + IMDB Pro cross-check July 2026):
- Middlesex University BA Animation.
- University for the Creative Arts (UCA) BA CG Arts.
- Hertfordshire BA 3D Games Art and Design.
- Teesside BA Computer Animation.
These are not bad universities. They are universities where the CG cohort does not disproportionately end up in paid CG jobs. If your target is a Soho VFX seat and your budget is £27,750, spend it at NCCA, NFTS, Escape, or Ravensbourne, or spend a fraction of it on self-study plus one CGMA or Rebelway term.
What the loan actually costs (SFE Plan 5).
Plan 5 covers English-domiciled students starting an undergraduate course from August 2023 onward. The current terms, verified July 2026 from gov.uk/repaying-your-student-loan:
- Repayment threshold: £25,000/yr income. Repay 9% of anything earned above the threshold.
- Loan write-off: after 40 years.
- Interest: tied to RPI (varies year to year).
- Tuition: £9,250/yr, so £27,750 for a three-year BA.
- Maintenance: up to about £10,227/yr for students living away from home outside London, more inside London. Also loaned, also Plan 5.
The practical effect: a graduate earning £35,000/yr repays £900/yr (9% of £10,000). At mid-career £50,000, that becomes £2,250/yr. Over 40 years many graduates repay less than they borrowed; the loan behaves more like a graduate tax than a mortgage. This is why the “£57,000 total debt” headline is misleading and why the marginal-tax framing matters more.
When self-taught wins.
Self-taught plus one paid online course is enough for most junior CG hires in the UK, provided the discipline permits it.
- Junior modelling: self-taught works.
- Junior lighting: self-taught works.
- Junior texturing: self-taught works.
- Junior motion graphics: self-taught works.
- Junior game art: self-taught works.
- Junior character animation: self-taught is harder; a mentored course (Animation Mentor, NCCA) meaningfully improves conversion.
- Junior Nuke compositor: self-taught is possible but rare; Escape Studios PgDip or the ScreenSkills runner-to-artist path convert better.
When a UK CG degree helps for visa reasons.
For non-UK students, the calculation is different. A UK undergraduate degree qualifies for the Graduate visa, which grants 2 years of post-study work rights (3 years for PhD graduates) without a job offer or sponsorship. Two years of legal UK work is often enough to convert to a Skilled Worker visa via a sponsoring studio.
If your route into UK CG is visa-first, the degree is worth it even where a domestic student would find it marginal. Aim high on the institution: NCCA Bournemouth, NFTS, Ravensbourne, or Escape Studios BA are strongest because their placement records give you the best odds of converting the Graduate visa into a sponsored job before it expires.
International fees at UK universities are typically £18,000-£28,000/yr for CG programmes. Add £15,000-£30,000/yr living costs. Total three-year outlay for an international BA sits around £100,000-£150,000. Weigh against the value of Graduate visa access, and against non-UK alternatives (Sheridan in Canada, Gnomon in Los Angeles, CG Spectrum online from anywhere).
What alumni actually earn 5 years in.
Editorial estimate, cross-checked with LinkedIn Salary Insights for graduates who confirm 5-year post-graduation status. Numbers are UK-wide medians in July 2026.
| Programme | 5-yr median UK salary | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| NCCA Bournemouth BA | £42,000-£55,000 | Strong. Framestore, DNEG, Aardman senior pipelines. |
| NFTS Digital Effects MA | £55,000-£75,000 | Very strong. Postgrad selection filter. |
| Escape Studios BA VFX | £38,000-£50,000 | Strong. Direct Soho pipeline. |
| Ravensbourne BA (relevant tracks) | £32,000-£45,000 | Solid. Motion and film production. |
| Middlesex / UCA / Herts / Teesside BA | £24,000-£35,000 | Weak. Many alumni not in CG at 5 yrs. |
Programmes at the bottom of that table are not producing lower salaries because the graduates are less capable; they are producing lower salaries because a smaller share of alumni end up in CG at all. This is the actual metric worth watching when choosing a course.
Decision box.
Decision tree
- You target Soho VFX and can live in London: Escape Studios BA or NCCA Bournemouth BA. Loan worth it.
- You target Aardman-tier animation: NCCA Bournemouth BA or NFTS MA. Loan worth it.
- You target motion graphics for brands: self-taught + School of Motion + one C4D masterclass. Loan not worth it.
- You target games art: self-taught + one Unreal or Substance course. Loan not worth it unless placed on a strong programme (Escape Studios Games Art BA, Abertay Games track).
- You need a UK visa hinge: the loan is worth it because a UK CG degree qualifies you for the Graduate visa (2-3 years post-study work). Pick NCCA, NFTS, or Escape.
