First 12 months learning Blender.

A month-by-month plan for a career-track UK beginner. 15 to 20 hours a week minimum. Three portfolio pieces by month 10, first junior applications by month 12.

Month 1: the donut and the low-poly series.

Install Blender from blender.org. It is free, will always be free, and the current LTS build is the right pick for a beginner. Every studio recruiter has seen the Blender Guru donut a thousand times. You still need to make it. It is the industry-standard baseline test that you can complete a five-part tutorial.

  • Blender Guru donut (free, YouTube). Andrew Price’s five-part beginner series covers modelling, sculpting, UV, texturing, lighting, and rendering inside one workflow.
  • Grant Abbitt Get Good at Blender (free, YouTube). Complementary series with a low-poly focus. Grant Abbitt teaches at Escape Studios and his pedagogy shows.

End of month 1 deliverables: finished donut on ArtStation, plus two low-poly props from the Grant Abbitt series.

Month 2: pick your lane and drill fundamentals.

Read the disciplines hub and commit to one of three lanes for the year:

  • Modelling lane: hard-surface, characters, environments. Blender + eventual ZBrush for sculpt.
  • Animation lane: character motion, acting shots. Blender + eventual Maya if going studio-side.
  • Sculpting lane: characters, creatures, digital-art bias. Blender sculpt or ZBrush.

Whichever lane, month 2 is fundamentals: topology and modelling flow (modelling lane), the twelve principles and body mechanics (animation lane), or ZBrush-style sculpting muscle (sculpt lane). The Blender Studio training library has free lane-specific courses; the paid subscription (£9.90/mo) unlocks the full library and every project file.

Month 3: ship your first finished portfolio piece.

One finished piece. Not a WIP. Not “I ran out of time and stopped rendering”. Actually finished, actually rendered, actually posted to ArtStation with thumbnails.

Constraints: pick a subject you can finish in 40 hours across 4 weeks. Not a full character. Not an entire environment. A well-composed hero prop or a stylised head sculpt or a 5-second animation cycle. The point of piece 1 is to prove to yourself you can go start-to-finish. Piece 1 is often the weakest piece in a final portfolio, and that is fine.

Month 4: lighting and rendering.

Cycles or Eevee. Cycles is the physically-correct path tracer; Eevee is the real-time rasteriser. Learn Cycles first because it teaches you actual light behaviour that transfers to Arnold, Redshift, and V-Ray. Eevee comes back later when the target discipline needs real-time (game art, motion graphics).

  • Andrew Price’s lighting talks (free, YouTube). The old but still-correct “gaffer” approach.

End of month 4 deliverables: relight your month-3 piece in three moods (day, dusk, moody interior). This is now a lighting study you can show alongside piece 1.

Months 5 and 6: second piece plus first sculpt.

Piece 2 is where your specialism starts to show. If your lane is modelling, do a full character bust or a detailed hard-surface hero. If your lane is animation, do a 10-second character acting shot with lip-sync. If your lane is sculpt, do a full creature study.

Alongside piece 2, take your first proper look at Blender’s sculpt tools. Do a quick 4-hour character-head sculpt for the exercise, even if sculpting is not your lane. Every 3D artist should be able to sculpt at least basic anatomy.

Months 7 and 8: intermediate specialisation.

This is where the lanes diverge and the free stack starts to strain. Time to deepen.

  • Modelling lane: retopology tools, harder UV challenges, first look at Substance Painter (indie licence £190/yr, or use Blender’s built-in tools for another 3 months).
  • Animation lane: character rigging in Blender (Rigify), harder body-mechanics shots, first look at Maya trial if going studio-side.
  • Sculpt lane: retopology, ZBrush trial (£360/yr full licence), harder anatomy studies.

Also: read the ArtStation portfolios of current juniors at Framestore, DNEG, MPC, Aardman, Rockstar North. That is the bar. Pick three you love and reverse-engineer what they did.

Month 9: introduce texturing properly.

Texturing is the discipline recruiters see first. A great model with poor textures reads as an intermediate portfolio; a good model with excellent textures reads as a hire.

  • Substance 3D Painter Indie (£190/yr): the studio-standard PBR texture painter. Adobe indie licence covers most freelance turnover thresholds.
  • Blender’s built-in texture painting (free): viable for the whole first year, especially with the Fluent add-on or Poliigon materials.
  • Materialize (free): the Substance-esque tool for generating PBR maps from photos.

Retexture your month-3 and month-6 pieces to Painter or Blender-PBR standard. Suddenly they are portfolio-grade.

Month 10: third portfolio piece.

Piece 3 is your hero. Everything you learned in months 1-9 goes into one big finished piece: the modelling, the sculpt, the retop, the UVs, the PBR textures, the lighting, the render. Give it 40-60 hours across 4 weeks. Do a proper breakdown image showing wireframe, UVs, textures, lighting passes, final render.

You now have three portfolio pieces plus a lighting study. That is enough for a first pass at a job.

Month 11: refine, reel-edit, portfolio v1.

Rebuild your ArtStation front page around the three pieces. Neutral background, real thumbnails, wireframe pass, clean typography, no music. For animation-lane learners: edit a 60-90 second reel in DaVinci Resolve (free), hard cuts, no titles beyond your name and email at the front and end.

Then book a portfolio review. Options:

  • ScreenSkills occasional free clinics.
  • ArtStation Learning paid critiques.
  • Peer review inside the r/blender and r/animation subreddits.

Hours per week and pace bands.

The 12-month plan assumes career-track pace. Adjust honestly to the hours you actually have.

The most common failure mode is claiming career-track pace while doing 6-8 hours a week. Better to plan honestly for 24 months at 10 hours than to plan aspirationally for 12 months at 20 hours.

Month 12: apply for junior roles.

Apply to ScreenSkills Trainee Finder in the spring window. Apply to every Soho studio, Bristol animation studio, and Manchester VFX shop careers page. Apply to freelance boards. Expect 40 to 100 applications before the first serious reply. That is normal.

If nothing lands by month 14, review the portfolio again and build a piece 4 that addresses the feedback you got. Do not stop; the second portfolio pass is often the one that lands.

Hardware you actually need.

Blender runs on modest hardware. The bare minimum for career-track pace in 2026:

  • CPU: any 8-core modern chip (Ryzen 5 7600 or Intel i5-13400 upwards). CPU matters for modelling responsiveness and sculpt performance.
  • RAM: 32GB. 16GB will bottleneck once you push into full character scenes or textured environments.
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 4060 or better for Cycles rendering. AMD works with HIP but Nvidia CUDA still leads for a beginner. 8GB VRAM is the practical minimum; 12GB+ is much better for hair and complex scenes.
  • Display: a colour-accurate IPS panel is worth more than a bigger monitor. A 27-inch 1440p IPS is the sweet spot.
  • Tablet: not strictly needed for month 1-6. A Wacom Intuos Small (£90) or Xencelabs (£150) becomes worthwhile at month 6 if sculpting or texturing.

A £1,200-£1,600 self-build hits every bar above. A £2,500+ system is a nice-to-have, not a requirement. Do not buy a Mac for CG unless you already own one; Nvidia CUDA support for Cycles is not on macOS, and studios ship Windows or Linux anyway.
