# motion design courses london

Motion design courses in London, 2026.

Motion design is a fast-growing UK career (broadcast, brand, tech, product). London hosts most of the country’s motion design employers (The Mill, ManvsMachine, Buck London, Passion, Territory, Nexus). Six programmes worth applying to, from short intensives through to RCA-level MA.

# who each fits

Which programme for which learner.

Royal College of Art, MA Digital Direction

Two years, ~£15,500/yr Home fee. RCA’s motion + interaction MA. Strongly conceptual, less pipeline-technical. Feeds ManvsMachine, Buck London, and Territory. Best fit for a graphic designer or filmmaker with 3+ years commercial experience who wants a rigorous conceptual framework. Not fit for absolute beginners.

Escape Studios PgDip Motion Graphics

Twelve months in-person, roughly £12,000. Cinema 4D + Redshift + After Effects + Houdini pipeline. Best fit for career switchers targeting a Soho or Camden motion-design studio in year one. Strong The Mill and ManvsMachine alumni pipeline. See the Escape Studios review.

Ravensbourne BA Animation (motion strand)

Three years, £9,535/yr. Motion strand runs a strong Cinema 4D and After Effects pipeline plus solid brand-motion project work. Direct pipeline into The Mill and Passion Pictures. Undergraduate route; not for career switchers with existing degrees.

Shillington London Bootcamp

Three months full-time or nine months part-time, £10,750. Broader graphic design curriculum with motion integrated. Best fit for someone wanting design + motion together rather than motion-specialist depth.

# remote alternatives

School of Motion vs London in-person.

School of Motion is the US-based mentor-led motion school that most UK learners consider alongside London in-person options. Individual courses run £999 to £1,999 per 8- to 12-week programme. Content quality is high; the tradeoff is no London-cluster networking and no in-person portfolio review.

For a working motion designer wanting specialist upskilling (Cinema 4D expressions, Houdini for MoGraph, Redshift lighting), School of Motion + Mograph Mentor typically deliver faster and cheaper than an Escape Studios PgDip. For a career switcher with no motion portfolio, Escape Studios PgDip delivers a stronger London-employer network within 12 months.

# employer targets

Who hires London motion designers.

  • The Mill: broadcast + brand, 350 staff, ongoing junior intake.
  • ManvsMachine: boutique high-end motion + brand, ~80 staff.
  • Buck London: ~120 staff, tech + brand motion, growing since 2023.
  • Passion Pictures: 80 staff, mixed motion + character animation.
  • Territory Studio: ~50 staff, screen graphics and title design.
  • Nexus Studios: ~150 staff, animation + interactive + motion.

For salary bands see the UK salary page (motion designer bands sit inside the mid-range there). For the animation-focused equivalent of this page see animation courses in London.

# software stack

The London motion designer software stack, 2026.

If you are aiming at The Mill, ManvsMachine, Buck London, or Passion Pictures, the software stack you need to have working portfolio evidence in is remarkably narrow. Four tools do 90% of the visible work.

  • Cinema 4D + Redshift: the London motion standard. Maxon One subscription £115/mo (2026). Redshift is bundled.
  • After Effects: compositing, tracking, camera projection, expressions. Adobe Creative Cloud £52/mo full plan or £20/mo single-app.
  • Houdini Indie (£220/yr): increasingly required at the top end for procedural motion, VDBs, and MoGraph-style setups.
  • Photoshop / Illustrator: texture, brand asset preparation, storyboard finish.

Unreal Engine is a growing addition to the stack for real-time and virtual production motion work, particularly at Territory and Nexus. Blender is accepted at most London motion houses as a supplementary tool but rarely as a primary one.

# what to reel

What a London motion showreel needs to contain in 2026.

A junior motion showreel that lands interviews at The Mill, ManvsMachine, or Buck London reliably includes:

  • Length: 60 to 90 seconds. Not longer. Reviewers spend under 30 seconds on average.
  • Best piece first. Do not save it for the reveal.
  • A rendered 3D piece with clean lighting. Cinema 4D + Redshift or Octane preferred.
  • An After Effects composited piece with tracked live-action. Shows integration, not just isolated CG.
  • A brand-adjacent piece. Logo animation, product reveal, or brand-system title sequence. Shows commercial thinking.
  • A breakdown reel or accompanying case study. One short case study of a single piece, with reference, wireframe, and process shots. This differentiates junior applications more than any other single asset.

Reviewers at London motion houses will accept a slightly thinner reel if the breakdown case study is strong. The reverse is not true: a polished reel with no evidence of process usually loses to a modest reel with an excellent breakdown.
