The Bristol animation cluster overlaps with a smaller VFX cluster including Films at 59 (post-production plus VFX), BDH (broadcast + digital), and outposts of larger Soho-based studios that maintain Bristol satellites. Rebellion Publishing runs a small games-art team in Oxford (75 minutes by train). Rocketmakers and Sponge Games run tech-adjacent work in the same postcode range.
Wallace and Gromit’s “A Grand Day Out” was made in a Bristol garden shed in 1989. The city’s modern animation infrastructure grew out of that lineage and the University of the West of England (UWE) BA Animation programme feeding into it. The Bristol cluster is fed by three universities that between them supply most of the local junior intake.
- University of the West of England (UWE Bristol): BA Animation and BA Games Design. Long-standing Aardman feeder programme; UWE’s animation degree is one of the oldest in the UK (running since the 1980s).
- Bath Spa University: BA Creative Media (animation strand). Smaller programme; strong on independent short-form and experimental animation.

The Aardman Academy runs its own short paid courses (typically 4 to 12 weeks) that sit outside the university system. These convert to first internal roles at above-average rates and are worth applying to as an alternative or complement to a degree route.
