How to become a VFX artist in the UK.
The UK VFX sector employs roughly 12,000 people. Soho is the centre. Framestore, DNEG, Cinesite, MPC, Milk, Union, and ILM London do most of the film work. Here is the honest route in for a UK learner in 2026.
# TL;DR: the 5-step route
- Pick a discipline (compositor, FX, look-dev, animation, environment). Do not stay generalist past year 1.
- Learn the pipeline software for that discipline (Nuke + Maya + Houdini, not Blender + After Effects).
- Build a 3-shot portfolio at junior standard.
- Apply to runner and junior roles at Framestore, DNEG, MPC, Cinesite, Milk. Expect 12 to 24 months freelance before a PAYE role.
- Take a specialisation course in year 2 (CGMA, Rebelway, or Escape Studios short course).
Step 1. Pick a discipline.
UK VFX studios hire specialists, not generalists. The lanes with the strongest 2026 UK junior demand:
- Compositor: Nuke first. Highest volume of junior roles. Read the Nuke guide.
- FX artist: Houdini first. Fewer roles but strongest pay ceiling. Read the Houdini guide.
- Look-dev / lighter: Maya + Katana + Arnold or Renderman.
- Environment artist: Maya + ZBrush + Substance + Nuke.
- Rigger: Maya + MEL / Python. Low volume, high pay.
Step 2. Learn the pipeline software.
Blender is a great learning tool. UK VFX studios do not run Blender pipelines. Once discipline is picked, move to the software the target studios use: Nuke, Maya, Houdini, ZBrush, Substance, Katana. See the software hub.
Step 3. Build a 3-shot portfolio.
Three shots, one page, one video reel of 60 to 90 seconds. Each shot shows the discipline you are applying for. For compositors: one green-screen key + one CG-integration + one clean-up. For FX: one destruction sim + one fluid sim + one particle system. UK studios reject reels longer than 90 seconds. Show the discipline, not the range.
Step 4. Apply.
UK VFX careers pages: Framestore, DNEG, Cinesite, MPC, Milk, Union VFX, ILM London. Also the ScreenSkills VFX job board and Escape Studios careers hub. Realistic first-role timeline: 12 to 24 months of freelance runner and junior-comp work before a PAYE seat.
Step 5. Specialise in year 2.
Once in-house, pick a specialisation course to stack: CGMA for character sculpt, environment art, FX. Rebelway for Houdini FX at senior standard. Escape Studios short courses for Nuke and Maya deep-dives.
UK VFX salary reality.
Junior compositor / FX artist: £24,000 to £32,000. Mid-level (3 to 5 years): £35,000 to £50,000. Senior (6+ years): £45,000 to £70,000. Lead / supervisor: £70,000 to £110,000. Freelance day rates track slightly above the PAYE band once you have 24 months of credits. See the full salary page.
