# careers / technical artist

How to become a technical artist in the UK.

Technical artist is the pipeline bridge between art and engineering. Rigging, shader authoring, tool scripting in Python or MEL, USD pipeline work, Houdini digital assets, Unreal Blueprint work. The role sits at the highest pay ceiling in UK 3D outside of supervisor tier, and it is chronically under-supplied at Framestore, DNEG, Rockstar North and Creative Assembly.

# UK salary band

Junior: £30,000 to £40,000. Mid (3 to 5 yrs): £45,000 to £65,000. Senior (6+ yrs): £65,000 to £95,000. Lead / pipeline TD: £95,000 to £140,000.

Three required skills.

  • Python (primary) plus MEL or C# depending on stack: every UK tech-art role expects Python fluency for Maya / Houdini tool scripting. Games tech-art adds C# for Unity or C++ / Blueprint for Unreal.
  • Rigging or shader authoring at production standard: pick one deeply. Rigging (Maya + Advanced Skeleton, or custom rigs) or shader authoring (Houdini VEX, Unreal HLSL, Substance Designer graphs). Being decent at both beats being expert at neither.
  • Pipeline literacy: USD scene assembly, version control (Git or Perforce), CI basics, ShotGrid / Ftrack workflow, and enough production maths (matrices, quaternions, linear algebra) to debug a broken transform.

Typical 3-year progression.

  1. Year 1: junior tech artist or rigger. Common route in: 12 months as an animator or modeller, then pivot after showing scripting work. Framestore, DNEG, MPC, Rockstar North, Creative Assembly all run junior TA seats. Base £30,000£40,000.
  2. Year 2: mid tech artist. Owning a tool suite (rig library, shader library, Houdini HDAs) used across multiple shows or projects. Salary £45,000£58,000. Contract day rates £450£600 in London VFX.
  3. Year 3: senior TA on the way to pipeline TD. Owning pipeline decisions (USD adoption, retopo automation, motion-capture data flow, LOD generation). Lead-tier £65,000+ opens up here.
