# review

Skillshare review 2026.

Subscription creative library, strongest on motion graphics and design-adjacent CG. One flat annual fee, all-you-can-consume video. We looked at the After Effects, Cinema 4D, and motion design shelves, which are the reason a UK CG learner would consider it. Verdict is measured: strong for motion beginners, weak for career-track CG.

Alternative to consider for motion beginners

TL;DR verdict

  • Verdict: Alternative to consider for motion graphics beginners. Not a career pathway.
  • Format: Annual subscription, video library, community projects, no mentor feedback.
  • Price: £119/yr (2026), free 1-month trial. Monthly plan discontinued in most regions.
  • Best for: Motion graphics starters (strong AE and C4D tutor bench), design-adjacent CG, curious samplers on a 30-day trial.
  • Skip if: Your target is hard-surface modelling, VFX compositing, character animation, or any UK studio job that expects a portfolio.

# what it is

What Skillshare is.

Skillshare is a subscription-only creative library, launched 2010, pivoted from live classes to on-demand video around 2014. One flat annual fee, unlimited access to the whole catalogue. The catalogue is broad: illustration, graphic design, photography, hand-lettering, marketing, plus a strong motion graphics and Cinema 4D shelf that is the interesting bit for CG learners.

Every class ends with a community project. Learners upload a piece, other learners give feedback in the comments. There is no instructor feedback and no formal critique. The classes themselves are typically short (60 to 180 minutes) and framed as skill deep-dives, not as career pathways.

# curriculum

Where the CG-relevant catalogue is strong (and weak).

Strong: motion graphics and design-crossover CG. The After Effects and Cinema 4D benches include multiple genuinely-recommended tutors (Ben Marriott, Emanuele Colombo, Jake Bartlett, Zach Christy from previous years) with production-quality classes on lighting, procedural animation, motion principles, and character rigging in AE. If you are a graphic designer trying to add motion to your toolkit, this is a rational subscription for a year.

Weak: everything else. Hard-surface Blender modelling is thin. VFX compositing in Nuke is absent. Character animation in Maya is absent. FX and simulation is absent. The library reflects the platform origin (designers and illustrators), not the working-CG-artist audience. If your target is Framestore comp, Aardman animation, or Rockstar game art, Skillshare will not get you there.

# price

Price and the subscription trap.

One price to know: £119/yr (2026). Skillshare killed the monthly plan in most regions during 2024 and it has not returned. There is a free 1-month trial that requires a card and auto-converts.

The value trap on any library subscription: you feel pressure to consume, and consumption is not learning. A learner who buys one Ben Marriott motion class and rebuilds three pieces in their own style gets more value than a learner who watches thirty classes and ships nothing. Set a project first, then use Skillshare to fill the gaps in the project. Not the other way round.

# UK fit

UK learner fit.

SFE loan eligibility: none. Skillshare is a consumer subscription, not a qualifying course provider.

Visa impact: none. Self-paced online study does not support a UK study or Graduate route visa.

UK studio recognition: nil for the certificate (Skillshare does not really issue meaningful certificates). Meaningful for the skill if you ship pieces. A UK motion designer applying to ManvsMachine, Buck London, or Passion Pictures is judged on the reel, not the platform. If Skillshare gets one strong motion piece onto your reel, it earned its £119. Tax note for UK self-employed learners: the subscription is typically deductible on Self Assessment as a training expense, keep the receipt.

# alternatives

Alternatives to consider.

  • School of Motion: proper motion graphics career pathway, mentor-led, £999–£1,999 per course. What Skillshare cannot give you.
  • Domestika: similar library-of-classes model, better production values, stronger illustration and character crossover.
  • Mograph Mentor: mentor-led motion track once you are past Skillshare-level fundamentals.
